Hey NOFX! I was wondering what the deal is about pods and gods. You said that you put my vagina on "Valuum" instead of pods and gods, and also, what ever happened to the song "lower". Why did you record songs but never put them on the cd. Is there a limit you guys have for songs. Cause that's kind of lame if there is.

Yeah I think there is a limit for punk records. None of our records are over 35 minutes and most are under 30. Any longer and boredom sets in. Check out some old classics like Circle Jerks "Group Sex" it's like 17 minutes, and Bad Religion's "No Control" is only 23.

Whats your favorite game in Vegas?

I play craps a little and some blackjack, but there is only one real game in vegas. High stakes Texas Hold em. I've been playing that for years, read 2 books and I'm still a rank amatuer. Some other big fans of Hold em include: Davey Havoc, Will from Fenix TX, Warren and Joe from the Vandals, and Fletcher from Pennywise.(he really sucks at it though)

Hey there, I read all your anti-MTV things, but I heard that they actually played some of your videos sometimes. Someone told me that you had to let them play one of your videos so they would play a No Use For a Name video or something like that so you let them. What was the deal with that/any truth to it?

The story you heard is almost entirely backwards. The sad truth is that some higher ups at MTV said that unless NOFX gave permission to let them play our videos they we're not going to play the No Use video. We never did, and they dropped the No Use video shortly after. By the way, NOFX has never been played on MTV. (although I heard that MTV in Brazil did play our video once or twice, but who can be sure, things are wierd down there).

Question: on "punp up the valuum", it says- "nofx is- ton, len, toe...", or some shit like that. Who the fuck are those dudes?

I'm not sure. I just had that photo in my office. I think they are in a punk band from Indonesia that sent me a demo.

What kinda cars do you guys drive?

I drive a 99 ford econoline van and a 64 lincoln convertable on nice days. El Hefe has a Ford expedition and a cherry 47 chevy. Melvin has a Tahoe and a 65 mustang, and Smelly has a buncha motorcycles a go cart that can go 60 mph and a pick up truck. (My van is the coolest though cuz it's got a bar in it).

where do you guys get inspiration when writing songs?

I usually get inspired by old school stuff, like the Subhumans, or AOD, or RKL. The wierd thing is that I only really write songs after a good shag. It's the only time my mind is clear.

Why do you produce songs like "The Decline" which is the absolute punk rock combined with great effort and then "Stranger than fishin´" where you quote yourself a bad musician and the song is as primitice as can be... You guys really mix up good music and good lyrics but why don´t you do it all the time after you´ve proven yourself able to ?

Playing complicated and difficult music isn't fun. It's challenging, but who wants to be challenged all the time.Simple punk is the funnest kind of music to play, that's why I'm in the Gimme Gimmes.

Mr. "Fat" Mike...have you ever read any Douglas Adams books? he's a twisted one...but I was wondering if you got the name "So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes" from Douglas Adams' "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish"?

yeah I stole that name from that book, and yeah I read most of his books, but the hitch hikers guide trilogy is the best stuff.

hey, love you guys and enjoyed reading your q&a. i'm a girl, 16... and i've been playing guitar for 4 years now and am a little discouragaged to take it farther and attempt singing in a group because even though i like tilt and a couple other bands with female leads, i have this hidden feeling in the back of my head that just thinks the sound of a guys voice singing really good punk could never be matched by a girls. i've written a couple of songs and i think they have good potential...i am very curious about your thoughts on girls singing punk...

I hate to admit it, but I kinda agree with you. Punk rock sounds better with guys singing, but there are some big exceptions. Brody from the Distillers is an awesome punk singer, along with Courtney Love, and Polly Styrene from X-Ray spex just to name a few. Mia from the Gits was an amazing singer too. So give it a shot, if your voice isn't so good you can still rip on the axe.

Question: What happened in prescott, AZ? The show got canceled cause it was overbooked or whatever, but I never got the money back for my ticket. Not that I care about 15 bucks but my friend bought 20 tickets to sell to people who didn't have'em. And he never got his money back either. In fact I don't know anyone who got money back. What cock sucker got our money? and sorry you wasted your time in ASSROT,AZ Our town sux

The show was originally booked and the promoter thought it would hold 1500 people and sold that many tix, but then, according to City Fire Code, emergency exits and stuff, they could only allow 450. The City council found out about it and had the police shut it down for fear of a riot. I got an e-mail back from the promoter of that show, it says: “Ticketweb did all the refunds for 30 days, after 30 days Capconcerts (I think from The Nile Theatre) did all refunds. Ticketweb only does refunds for 30 days and they have to send in their tickets. After that we did refunds for several months, we either refunded or let people use their tickets for other shows but if they didn't send in their ticket we couldn’t do any refunds. I’m sure there are a few tickets that weren’t sent in but the majority of the tickets were sent in. If there is anyone out there who has a ticket, we still to this day will honor their ticket. Really all they have to do is come to a show, we never had any problem refunding anyone.”

I was watching this porn once and during one of the previews for a movie called "Monkey Gang Bang", they played part of "The Longest Line". Did you guys get paid for this or did they just rip you off? And do you know where I can score a copy of the flick?

Don’t we really want to know the answer to the second question first? Sorry, I don’t know where to get it either. I’ve never even heard of it. Where have I been? If you find it again, send us a copy. “Monkey Gang Bang” sounds like the kind of movie no self respecting porno collection can do without. Now for the first question: We never got paid for it, as far as I know. But having our music set to such fine cinematic content is kind of rewarding in itself, don’t you think?

I know by the email name I probably seem like a fucking dork but I chose it when I was 14 so I'm sorry . Anyway , Melvin , I had a Mark 4 for a couple of days and I couldn't get a good distorted sound out of it , what settings do you use ? Oh yeah , I'm really enjoying pump up the valuum . I'm relly glad you guys haven't started sucking , even though you're kinda old . Thanks .

I think you screen name is rather fetching. The sound out of your amp starts with what guitar and pick up you use. It better be a humbucker, and I prefer a higher output one. This same setting sounds great with a Les Paul and weak with a Strat. Mark IV: Use Rhym2 Channel. Turn the gain up to 8-10. Bass and Mid around 5 or 6. Treble around 7 or 8. The Presence should be 7-8. Put the second volume anywhere from 1-3, and the big Master volume as loud as you can stand it. It doesn’t have to be loud to sound good, but if you’re playing live, you’d better listen to it at that level. This is a very clean, but very crunchy distortion sound. If that’s too clean, use the lead channel with the same Bass, Mid, and Treb settings, but the first gain should be around 7-8 and the second gain about the same. I set the sliding EQ on the front at a slight ‘V’ shape, with the Mid slider not adding or subtracting, and the others higher on each side. Oh yeah, on the back, I put the switch to all 4 tubes (Class A or Simul class, I can’t remember) And I switch to Pentode, not Triode, for a smoother sound. If your amp sounded bad, it might have needed new tubes. There should be all AX7’s in the pre-amp section and all four of the same power tubes (I use 6L6’s, or EL34’s or whatever you like) Start with these settings and then change them a little here and there and notice the difference. It’s a great sounding amp, so don’t use a distortion box, at least not until it sounds good on it’s own and then you can color it up with a good stomp box. And Thanks, I'm really glad you think we haven't started sucking, me too.

What think Nofx about German Beer?

NOFX love German beer! What a great country, to care so much about doing something so perfect, like making beer, that there is a law to keep it so. As far as I understand it, the law restricts chemical additives and preservatives in German beer. It's the chemicals that make the hangover so bad. I've been told one of America’s most popular beers (rhymes with ‘Dud’) has Formaldehyde in it! Then again, that might be one of those Urban Myths. When we first started touring around Europe, we drank a lot of Hefe Weizen. Mike and I like Beck’s the best, I like Pilsner Urquell, too. St Pauli Girl is nice. Now if we could get a law drafted restricting Sheisse and Rice…

If you had a chance to do start from scratch all over again, is there anything you would have done differently?

yeah, different name. NOFX has to be one of the worst band names ever. we shoulda been dogpiss, or the idiots, or something. anything is more punk than nofx. sounds like some keyboard band.

Are you guys in any way, shape, or form influenced by Herb Albert @ the Tijuana Brass?

yeah, I fuckin love Herb. The song Flossing a Dead Horse was inspired by him, and was originally titled "HERB". kinda wierd.
