This question is for Erik the drummer, aka Smelly.. I love your double bass drum beats that you play at 412 Beats Per Minute. on such songs as Pump up the Valium. The drum beat that you play in that song i've heard in countless other nofx songs, (Linolouem) i gotta ask tho why do you always play that same drum beat, with the hi hat and snare drum struck at the same and the bass drum doing the inverted double bass drum flamadiddles. It sounds great and since you guys are wizard of the craft of punk rock music and making more money and more albums than i could imagine that sound Pissah.. You obviously are doing something right. Enlighten me on your motivation and decision, basically what makes you play that drum beat that you are famous for by other drummers in my community. come on. you know what i'm talking about...

its not a double bass drum,,, its a single bass drum with a single pedal. and to answer your question why do i always play the same beat, well, have you ever heard that saying if it aint broke dont fix it?

Quick question for Erik... You always seem to have a pretty sweet kit, in comparison I have a very crappy kit. But I've been saving up a little cash and hope to buy a less crappy kit. Which brings me to my question, what should you look for in a kit when you have a very limited budget? Thanks for any info and the tunes.

look for solid hardware, thats important, thats what breaks. for about 500 bucks you can get some pretty good new drums these days. d.w. has a line called pacific drums that are good and pretty cheap...erik

in the song marxist brothers you mention albums by propaghandi, chumbawumba, and rage against the machine. do you like or hate these bands?

The point of mentioning these bands was what they all three have in common: They all have politically driven lyrics. Yes, I like them _Melvin

what is that strange percussion sound in the song "philthy phil philanthropist"? is it a xylophone or did you use a keyboard?

You guessed correctly, it was the sound of a xylophone, played on a keyboard. _Melvin

so im sure you get asked this a lot, or maybe not at all, im still going to ask because im lame like that. How do you guys feel about the current state punk music?

I think that there are plenty of great punk rock bands still around. The problem is that we are being overrun by rock and metal bands who have no scene of their own. _Melvin

Why is the booklet in the Wolves in wolves cover so boring? I've always enjoyed reading your booklets because of the foto-collages n shit, but this time it was all plain and straight, and... yeah well... boring...Did'nt you guys have any influence on the artwork, or was it your decision as a band to make it more plain?

Didn't you read the lyrics to 60% _Melvin

hi guys hows it going? I love the new album keep doing what your doing. As a canadien ive always been curious if you guys have ever played hockey weither that be street hockey or ice.

I think ice hockey is an amazing game. It's super-fast and it can be brutal, but there is also so much finesse to it. When I lived in LA, I had season tickets for the Kings, and now that I live in San Francisco, I still watch them on TV. Live games are way better though and I'll watch anybody play live ice hockey. I play once in a while when we're home, sometimes twice a week. I am a pretty bad skater, and I'm never quite sure where I should be on the ice, but it's really fun and I like it a lot. _Melvin

hey this is one is for melvin. did you use wax or just plain dirt for your dreads? i had dreads and i tried wax but it suckt. you probly pay someone or make some mtv idiot do it for you huh? just kidding anyways answer me

I used to use wax, I think it sucks too, someone told me once that it doesn't really help the hair in the dreads stick together, because it's WAX! it was pretty sticky, tho. There's stuff called Knottyboy locksteady gel, besides the name and the whole 'cleverness' of it, I like it the best. I only wash my hair once a month or less, let your natural oil and sweat get in there. It helps too if you're o.c.d. and twist your hair a lot and pull on them and stuff. Once in a while I will go to a salon and have it dyed and stuff, she ties strings in to keep those dreads together that come apart _Melvin

How do you guys feel about the US's Music Publishers' Associations view about music tabs. I've been talking about it, and one of the ways I've been able to expand as a bassist, and my friends as other musicians is to cover a few songs now and again, and when we do that, we get our tabs from free tab websites. However, "MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed. He said unlicensed guitar tabs and song scores were widely available on the internet but were "completely illegal". One of the reasons I ask you guys about this is because he said that it hurts the artist. Do you think it hurts you that I didn't pay you to learn how to play "My heart is yearning" on bass? And do you think its more important that people get paid for every aspect of their intelectual property, or that their intectual property helps people better themselves?

I like to look up tablature on songs that I'm into, even if only for the moment, I'll listen to the song and play along, how does that hurt the artist who wrote it? Sometimes I'll order a book of tab on some band from Hal Leonard Music website or where ever. Anyway, the tablature found on these websites usually differs from each other, who can say which one is right except the person who wrote it or played the instrument on that version.? What's the point here? Money? I think this MPA president uses the words 'hurts the artist' as a way of meaning the publisher could be making money from the sales of tablature. If the artist cares so much about it, they can write out an 'official' version and sell it somehow. _Melvin

I've never hear the word 'Krite' and I've never heard Mike use the word 'Krite' _Melvin
