You guys said you don't wanna be played on the radio, but do you support independent radio stations, like college stations, who play your stuff?
Sure, college radio doesn't exploit bands they play, they don't play the same fucking song 9 times a day and you don't have to pay anyone to play you. We send all our stuff to college radio, but the majors get shit.
Hey, I know that you guys are against our government or at least certain aspects of it. Do you have any ideas on how to chage the American government so it is better or is there another way other than democracy that you think would be better?
I think democracy is just fine. If we could just get the damn lobbyists and Christians out of Washington (nothing personal Tooth and Nail).
In NOFX lyrics, there are countless plays on words and other puns. Some of them (although no punk would ever admit it) seem almost "Shakespearian." I was wondering did Fat Mike study Shakespear or English or does he enjoy literature at all? If not, where did these puns come from if not just a wacky sense of humor?
I'm just fuckin' wacky I guess. I did see Romeo and Juliet though. I thought Claire Danes was great.
I have a few questions. How do you get the transition effect at the end of "The Decline?" You also have a similar effect on the last song of "So Long" and I have never heard that before or on any other artists' album. It's really cool and I just wanted to know how that is achieved?
We slowly took all the high and low end out of the mix. Your left with a whole lot of ugly mid. That's why it sounds like an AM radio.
I am a skater and I was wondering what skateboarding background you guys have. I have seen some pictures of Melvin on the website skating and I was wondering if you guys got into it at all way back when.
We used to skate all the time, at home, on tour, wherever and whenever we could. I think that they took more pictures while I skated instead of the other way around. There is some footage of Erik skating on our "10 Years. . ." video.
I used to go to Upland Pipeline a lot. Mike, Erik, and I would skate at Reseda Skatacross after it had closed. That place was fun, it had snake runs and cool cruiser shit. We would build a half pipe in anyone's backyard whether they wanted it or not. We also raided a lot of empty pools back then. Over the last few years I've hardly skated at all. There was other stuff to concentrate on in place of skateboarding. I'll always have some kind of physical activity in my life. Everyone in NOFX snowboards. Erik has been going to a bunch of the new skateparks that seem to be opening all over the place lately. I've just recently got a new deck so I hope to be going soon.
In "Heavy Petting Zoo" there is a song called 8th August, what does it mean for you this day?
This is pretty funny. I wrote this song about Jerry Garcia dying, cuz I fucking hate the Grateful Dead, but it turns out I had the date wrong. He really dies on August 9th. Whoops. I guess I'm lame.
Tell us about your love for Rudimentary Peni. . .is it a farce (no pun)? Just wondering.
We used to listen to Rudimentary Peni a lot. They were a very original band, both in songwriting and overall sound. Cool twisted melodies and lyrics. There will probably never been another band like them. Over the years, we've covered a few of their songs and, believe it or not, in some of our songs, we try to sound like them. We used to listen to the Subhumans a lot also. There was always a Peni/Subhumans cassette in the van.
Hey NOFX! (It's nice to know that my email won't be sent to a bunch of corporate managers who look over fanmail). . .anyway I was just wondering if you know of any good punk clubs out in San Fransisco where you guys are from. . .I recently went out there, hoping there would be a handful of punk venues and all I saw was one club cocodries which only had one punk show a month practically. . .It was a Criminals show. . .So if you could tell me maybe about some underground clubs or whatever that you like out in SF? I would appreciate it. Thanks Mike, or whoever gets this!
One of your many brain damaged fans,
Go to Stinky's Peepshow Thursday nights at the Covered Wagon (917 Folsom St.) Lots of good punk bands and large Go-Go dancers.

Hey, Have you guys had any problems with Grateful Dead fans?
There is a group of hippies that live down the street that decided to come over and "jam" with me because they could hear me playing my drums. So I politely said "no thanks," I wasn't interested and sent them on their way. The next day they came by again with their demo tape and asked me to listed to it. I did and it was the worst piece of shit I have ever heard, then one of the guys starts smoking weed in my house and picks up a guitar and starts singing to me. At this point I had had enough! So I sicked my hostile roommate after them. He said "Alright you crystal suckin' hippies, listen up! We are punkrockers, and punkrockers hate hippies. So that means we hate you, so get the fuck out and don't come back!" So, they haven't come back in two years. Pretty boring story actually, but they were irritating.
What has been the hardest time since you started the band?
THE FIRST TIME WE WENT TO EUROPE IN 88, EVERYONE HATED US. PEOPLE THREW BOTTLES AT US AND SPIT ON US. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT WE DID SUCK PRETTY BAD AND WE DESERVED EVERYTHING WE GOT. I WAS THINKING OF QUITING NOFX AND ROADIEING FOR OPERATION IVY, THEN THEY BROKE UP AND WE STARTED WRITING BETTER SONGS. OH YEAH AND SMELLY HAD A BAD DRUG PROBLEM FOR SEVEN YEARS. HE'S BETTER NOW. FAT MIKE
